Tustin, CA. is one of the original towns in Orange County. It was established in 1868 by a carriage maker named Columbus Tustin. Tustin has over 17,000 trees and is known as the city if Trees. Today, Tustin is a middle to upper middle class town with many housing tracts built in the 1960s and 1970s. In addition, many newer homes have been built in recent years in new community in south Tustin called Tustin Ranch.
The state in 2005 counted 25,927 housing units, of which 8,375 we're single family detached, 3,531 were single family attached (condos), 13,113 multiples unit apartments and 908 mobile homes. The 2000 census found that about 50 percent of Tustin's housing units were owner occupied, about 50 percent rentals. On the historic side, Tustin has an ''old town' that gives this city a community heart. Old Tustin is gradually remaking itself with small shops, eateries and boutiques that makes it a peasant area for pedestrians. An old lumber yard was replaced with shops, townhouses, apartment complex and new condos. Many of the older homes around the Old Town area have been remodeled or touched up over the recent years. The residential section of Tustin is not that big, all neighborhoods are within a few minutes drive of the downtown and each other.
On the other end of the age spectrum, Tustin Ranch is a newer comunity within the city limits of Tusin. Tustin Ranch broke ground in the early 1990’s and is master planned residential community with a mixture of single family detached homes, condominiums and rental apartment buildings.
The town is served by Tustin Unified School District. Which also takes in part of Irvine. In state comparisons almost all schools are scoring above the 50th percentile, some in the 90th percentile. District also serves unincorporated areas so it's hard to break out neighborhood scores. The Tustin school district has one magnet school, Tustin Memorial Academy. It offers a program that stresses fundamentals and a fast program for gifted kids. Tustin High School has a chamber orchestra of 35 players. In 2005 the group was invited to play at Carnegie Hall in New York City, a great honor. The community raised $66,000 to fund the trip and buy the students better violins.
Tustin has a Boys and Girls Club, and a YMCA that runs programs for kids after school. Usual activities and sports for kids and adults. Tustin also has a Library, Museum, Seniors center, Golf course, and Driving range. It also has about a dozen parks including a sports park with softball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, playground.
